We recommend changing the brake fluid every two to three years, although the exact interval may vary depending on the vehicle model, the manufacturer’s recommendations and specific driving conditions. The brake fluid in a vehicle should be changed regularly to ensure the braking system functions correctly. This timeframe is based on the fact that brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air over time, which can lead to a reduction in braking performance and corrosion in the brake components. Changing the brake fluid regularly therefore contributes to the safety and longevity of your vehicle. As a general rule, brake fluid should not need topping up, provided the braking system has no leaks. Brake fluid is a sealed system and does not normally get used up or evaporate, unlike engine oil, for example. Generally, garages routinely check fluid levels, including brake fluid, during every service. However, if a low fluid level is nevertheless detected in the brake fluid reservoir, this may indicate a leak in the braking system, which should be checked immediately by a qualified mechanic. It is important to note that a low fluid level in the brake fluid reservoir may indicate a potentially serious safety issue, as this can impair braking performance. We therefore advise taking immediate action to rectify the problem if a low fluid level is detected, rather than simply topping up the fluid.

Yes, DOT 5.1 can be used instead of DOT 4 in most cases, as both have similar chemical properties. However, it is important to follow the manufacturer’s specifications to ensure it is suitable for your vehicle.
