The frequency of oil changes varies depending on the type of oil used, driving conditions and the manufacturer’s recommendations. It is generally recommended to change the engine oil every 15,000 to 30,000 kilometres or at least once a year. Shorter intervals are advisable for diesel engines or under heavy loads. We advise against mixing different viscosity grades, such as 5W-30 with 0W-30 or 10W-40, as this can impair the performance of the engine oil and, consequently, lubrication. Although it is possible to mix oils in an emergency, the oil should be changed as soon as possible to ensure optimum performance.

The viscosity grade indicates how thick or thin the oil is at different temperatures. The first number (e.g. 5W) represents the viscosity at low temperatures, whilst the second number (e.g. 30) indicates the viscosity at operating temperature. A lower cold-weather rating means that the oil flows more freely at low temperatures. This classification helps to select the right oil for different operating conditions and temperatures, ensuring optimum performance and protection for engines and other machinery.

Automatic transmission fluid (ATF) is specially formulated to meet the requirements of automatic transmissions and hydraulic systems, whilst manual transmission fluid and axle oil are designed for manual gearboxes. The two types of oil have different properties and should not be confused with one another.

We recommend changing the brake fluid every two to three years, although the exact interval may vary depending on the vehicle model, the manufacturer’s recommendations and specific driving conditions. The brake fluid in a vehicle should be changed regularly to ensure the braking system functions correctly. This timeframe is based on the fact that brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air over time, which can lead to a reduction in braking performance and corrosion in the brake components. Changing the brake fluid regularly therefore contributes to the safety and longevity of your vehicle. As a general rule, brake fluid should not need topping up provided the braking system has no leaks. Brake fluid is a sealed system and does not normally get used up or evaporate in the same way as, for example, engine oil. Generally, garages routinely check fluid levels, including brake fluid, at every service. However, if a low fluid level is nevertheless detected in the brake fluid reservoir, this may indicate a leak in the braking system, which should be checked immediately by a qualified mechanic. It is important to note that a low fluid level in the brake fluid reservoir may indicate a potentially serious safety issue, as this can impair braking performance. We therefore advise taking immediate action to rectify the problem if a low fluid level is detected, rather than simply topping up the fluid.
